RANDOM THOUGHT: Being Locally Well-Traveled and Locally Well-Read

Updated: Aug 21, 2021

When we think of being well-traveled and well-read, we often think about jet-setting across the globe to exotic places in foreign lands. We imagine ourselves shopping amongst the locals, finding bargains at bustling street markets, eating local cuisine, and indulging in its cultural arts. But how well-traveled are we when it comes to our local neighborhoods and communities?

Did you know that in Bronzeville, you can go to listen to some of the earliest collection of Jazz music on vinyl or feel like a star walking along the Bronzeville Walk of Fame? In Chatham and West Garfield, do you know where you can find some of the very best Chicago-style BBQ (with Mississippi Delta roots)? Or visit one of the best Mexican coffee shops in Pilsen located in an architectural gem? Or in Old Town, where you can buy some of the finest and most exotic spices on this side of Morocco? And do you know where to view exceptional urban art on concrete canvases all over Chicago by a collection of local artists that rivals the works of Picasso, Warhol, Kahlo, or Basquiat?

Traveling. It leaves you speechless, then it turns you into a storyteller. ~ Ibn Battuta

Do you know the neighborhood historian who doubles as a community guide on where to get a great shoeshine or custom made bowtie by a local artisan? Do you know where the record shops that host the best in-store workshops as well as cultural events? Do you know where the best community urban gardens that existed before urban gardening was cool?

There are benefits and rewards in local discovery. When we take time to explore outside of our comfort zones, we learn about others, and we learn about ourselves. We won't explore a different neighborhood's cultural scene because of the negative things we "heard" about that community. When we challenge our fears and negative self-talk, we gain a wealth of knowledge and see the 'local world' with bigger eyes and bigger hearts.

Local exploration enriches our lives. I've always enjoyed going to different places, meeting interesting people, and learning new things. I believe that those experiences helped shape me to be a well-rounded, well-read person. I still have a lot to see and learn. Writing about my experiences is a new creative venture for me. It's a scary process, but I love writing and traversing. I want to share my experiences with you. Some rewards require taking risks.

So how do you start on your journey to being locally well versed and well-read? Start by researching credible sources on the subject that interest you. For example, if you like architecture, read industry magazines, guide books, and watch expert videos on the topic. So when you venture upon your new find, you will have some beforehand knowledge. Say you want to try a new restaurant. Bring along a notepad, and review your experience. Take in the environment, rate the service, savor the meal, then write about it. You'll spend less time feeling self-conscious and more time enjoying yourself. Realize that most people aren't paying attention to you. They are focused on themselves and what they are getting out of their own experiences. If you are viewing art, focus on how it makes you feel. Exploration has its health advantages as well. Traversing helps overcome your fears in other areas of life. You discover your likes and dislikes. You learn about the things that make you passionate. It boosts your self-confidence and well-being. It allows you to meet new people.

Learning about other things, places, and people outside of ourselves helps us grow as human beings. Be encouraged and inspired to roam freely. May you connect with mindfulness, reflection, insight, comfort, and engagement.
